What’s in Your Water?

Since we wouldn’t survive for more than 3 days without this precious resource and every living cell in the body needs it to keep functioning, wouldn’t it be important to consume the right kind and purest form of water? Just like many other products, there is a lot of confusing information around water and what labels claim. An astonishing 2,100 chemical compounds have been found in U.S drinking water, yet the EPA has established enforceable safety standards for only 87. The CDC estimates that up to 33-million cases of gastrointestinal illness associated with public drinking water systems occur in the U.S annually. This prompts many people to use a filter or buy bottled water.

Unfortunately, most water filtration systems gradually lose their effectiveness without providing any warning. And bottled water has frequently been found to contain contaminants, despite the perceived safety and the ridiculous costs.

A simple filter won’t do. Filters can reduce some chemicals that cause disagreeable taste and odor, like cholorine, but they don’t stop other common contaminants like arsenic, copper, fluoride, lead, or viruses and bacteria. Filters can sometimes do more harm than good by becoming a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. Even worse, if they are not changed often enough, filters can actually release contaminants back into your water.

The good news is that there is a way you have water you can trust.

Not all water is equally hydrating. Not all source of water are safe to drink. The right kind of filtered water is extremely hydrating.

Ensuring a safe and pure supply of drinking water for your family should be at the very top of your list.

It’s not enough to simply funnel your tap water through a basic filter in a pitcher. In order to eliminate the maximum contaminants possible, you’ll need a filtration method that combines multiple advanced forms of media (i.e. carbon, “activated” carbon, charcoal, ozonation, and reverse osmosis).

If it’s financially feasible, a whole-house water filtration system will ensure your water is purified to the maximum extent possible.

If you live in a city and get municipal water through tap, ideally, you’ll want to consider both a whole house filter and a point of use filter on your kitchen tap. This covers all the bases for protecting your appliances from harsh chlorine and chlorine byproducts, protecting your lungs from airborne water contaminants that come from the shower, and protecting your tap water from all contaminants that both arrive at your house and are added by your own plumbing.

They might not be the cheapest options, but reverse osmosis offer added purification. This technologies capture hard-to-remove chemicals such as fluoride, arsenic, hexavalent chromium, nitrates, and perchlorate, but they don’t remove chlorine, trihalomethanes, or VOCs – hence the need for the other filtration methods mentioned above.

You may access to well water. Have the water tested for pathogens, contaminants, heavy metals and radioactive ions. Fruit Growers Lab in Santa Paula, California offers that service. Their office number is 805-392-2000

Your best bet for ensuring good health (and protecting the environment), is to filter your own water at home using a reverse osmosis filter.

Your best bet is to install a system that uses the right kind of Reverse Osmosis technique to filter your water.

A good reverse osmosis system today will send about 2.5 gallons of water (the rejected toxins and water necessary to clean the membrane) for every gallon purified. This is a very small amount of water – if you use a gallon of purified water a day, 2.5 gallons would be like one family member staying in the shower for 30 seconds, or flushing a low-flush toilet once a day.

Renters use this system with excellent results, installing it and then taking it with them when they move out with no impact on plumbing. The units are usually simple to remove. Ask the company that sells the products.

The benefits of filtered water systems can and will overshadow their initial costs. Installation of a water filtration system may be a little pricey, but the running cost is notably less as compared with buying bottled water all the time.

2) Another local water expert

If you live within Santa Maria, Simi Valley, Calabasas and Malibu area, you can use my local trustworthy guy.

We also have a twin water softener (whole house system) that removes the calcium and magnesium (Hardness Minerals) from the water and replaces these minerals with sodium if you use salt or potassium if you use Potassium Chloride in your softener.

Additionally we have a catalytic carbon and KDF 85 Cubes inside both of our softener tanks.  This reduces (can’t say removes, but it does) the chlorine, Chloramines (chlorine + ammonia), herbicides, pesticides along with odors in the water.

I have been working with a local water purification company since 2000. I trust this local person because not only is he super knowledgable about different systems, he will talk you out of anything that is a “Bell and a Whistle”. You may also have another stage added to your system that creates a negative Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP). This step will cost an additional $225. I would recommend it for those especially with compromised immune system. It creates micro clusters in water (see explanation below).

You can get ionized water like Kangen water at fraction of cost IF you insist on having it. Although I don’t think it is necessary to have a water ionizer for the above reasons, my local guy can even can install a water ionizer just like Kangen system but not with the hyped up costs.

Kangen countertop system costs about $4100. Under the sink one costs $5,500.

The person who installed and maintains our system can have a Platinum Water Ionizer installed for you for $2700 if you mention “BareFoodAngel”. That is a $2800 savings. Ionizers are a very poor investment because they don’t purify the water, and they only create a weak alkaline effect. It is far better to actually completely purify your water that will create a powerful alkaline effect naturally

3) The ONLY countertop I recommend

If you are not able to install a whole house system and/or install a reverse osmosis system (there are many kinds and there are many scams. Read below which ones I recommend), This is the only over the counter top product that is promising and that I recommend. This is the ONLY technology I recommend that is counter top that removes virtually all toxic chemicals in your tap water. It removes fluoride along with other contaminants. It is only $449 + $19.95 S&P.

It uses a fascinating countertop reverse osmosis technology that also removes toxic elements down to single-digit parts per billion levels. It’s blazing fast because it benefits from a small, silent pump that pushes the water though a four-stage filtration process with sufficient pressure to speed the entire process.

Remarkably, the system doesn’t require any plumbing at all. You simply add water into a removable tap water reservoir, place it on the machine and it filters the water automatically, producing ultra-clean water in a BPA-free receptacle (with its own dispenser) that you can detach and put into the refrigerator, if you want, to chill the water.

The system removes 128 toxic chemicals and heavy metals from your water, including most of the fluoride found in city water. I don’t yet have the exact fluoride removal testing numbers because I’m waiting for our Ion Chromatography instrument to come online. Once that’s up and running, we’ll be able to confirm the fluoride removal for all water filters with scientific accuracy.

3) Bottled Water Pick Up Stations

If a home water filtration system aren’t feasible, the next best thing is to drink filtered or spring water, either bottled or from an advanced filtration machine. Many natural food and health food stores now have full-service water machines that offer purified, mineral-balanced drinking water that’s treated through multiple stages of media. For example, FreshPure Reverse Osmosis Water offers some of the cleanest, self-serve water for just pennies a gallon. They have many locations. You have to call them to ask them for closest location.

How to Verify Claims

To get verification that the contaminants mentioned above are removed as the company claims, you may ask for a 3rd party validation. Ask for NSF or Water Quality Association to give you the validation specific to that model number. If not, see if they have a validation for the part of the water purification system that removes the contaminants.

If you are working with a local company and because it is a very expensive validation for the company to go through, another option you have is to have your water tested through either Fruit Growers Laboratory in Santa Paula California or National Testing Labs in the Mid West.
